Breakneck Ridge

Although short in mileage, this hike is a strenuous rock scramble with gorgeous views.
Trailhead is on the southbound side of Route 9D Cold Spring, NY
Parking: Southbound and northbound side of Route 9D, 1/4 mile north of the trailhead.
Miles: 2.8
Hours: 2-3

What I took:

  • 1-1.5L water
  • snack
  • daypack
  • first aid
  • knife
  • tape
  • headlamp
  • compass
  • map - New York New Jersey Trial Conference #102
  • synthetic clothing
  • hiking boots or trail running shoes
  • NO COTTON - Why no cotton?  Cotton is a thicker material and isn't as breathable as synthetic materials.  Once its wet, it becomes heavier and takes longer to dry.

This rock scramble is one of the highlights of the Hudson Highlands.  Although short on distance, you will climb 1000+ feet in less than a mile.  This opening section of trail is the toughest on this quick loop.

The trail begins to climb immediately from the river side, moving over the tunnel and onto the open rock of Breakneck Ridge.  Follow the White trail markers as you climb.  There are easier routes along the way marked with an X or a sign.  After a few minutes you will start to get some nice views of Storm King Mountain and the Hudson River.

The first of 4 scenic overlooks/ledges is marked with a flagpole.  Stop to have some water, a quick snack or just enjoy the view as you catch your breath.

Continue on your climb to the next 2 viewpoints.  After reaching the third scenic point marked with a sign noting the elevation, the trail will get a bit gentler as you approach the intersection of the Yellow Undercliff Trail.

Continue on the White Breakneck Ridge Trail and climb to the last scenic spot.  It is not the greatest, but you are pretty much home free at this point. The trail rolls gently, and after about 10 minutes you will meet the Red Breakneck Bypass Trail.  Make a left here and follow this trail for about 15 minutes as you begin your descent.

You will get a few more glimpses of the river through the trees as you make your way down the mountain.  Another left turn awaits at the junction with the Yellow Wilkinson Trail.  As the marker suggests, it will take you back to Route 9D.  The remaining hike is uneventful, save for the sounds of the road as you get closer.  After about 20 minutes you will reach the road and your car!
